Representation on children of men

REPRESENTATION

WHERE is being represented? London, England
How is it being represented? Polluted, musky air, Technologic and dark

Is it a positive or negative representation? Negative as the air is highly polluted which foreshadows bad health, but it also is represented positively due to technology

How is this created? With a camera, editing, special affects and lighting.

WHO is being represented? People living in England, Women not being able to reproduce.

Eg. Do we have a “hero”? Possibly

How do we know he is the hero? That the camera is highly Focused on him.

Does he fit all of our established ideas of what a hero in a film should be? No

If yes, what are these: if no, what is there in the text which makes him unsatisfactory as a hero? He is not handsome, he is also older then the stereotypical hero, and also does not have muscle and strong looking physique

How are women represented? Infertile

How is the future represented? Technologically advanced, but highly polluted muggy air, causing surroundings to deteriorate and look dirty.

Can you notice any other social groups or places which are represented? The people featured seemed to all be in pairs of two e.g. The police

How are these representations constructed? They are huddled together, stereotypically the pairs of two consisted of both male and female to symbolize a couple/Relationship.

MEDIA LANGUAGE:

Made up of lighting, camera work, editing, sound, mise-en-scene

Lighting:
What is the lighting like? Dull and depressing
What is the effect of this on the text? It creates a dull and depressing scene, allowing you to empathize with the scene.

What is the effect of this on the audience? It allows you to empathize with the scene and what’s happening at the certain time. it creates a depressing atmosphere.

Camera Work:
What do you notice about the camera work? It is very varied, angled an also hand held camera shot is used, also panning is used to show the

audience a bigger view of surroundings and to also highlight the Huge amount of technology in the film.

Does it conform to your expectations of a major feature (fictional) film? Yes. This film is a hybrid as it has a mixture of genres to of them being a thriller, and an action film.

Is there anything you think is done differently? It starts from the future and from the view that children cannot be born.

Why have the camera shots been chosen? Panning was chosen to show a wider view of surroundings, the angels used allow you to view the whole picture, an the everything! Hand held camera was used to allow the audience to feel more engaged.

Editing:
What kind of editing can you recognise? shot reverse shot

What does this do to the text? it allows you to see the reactions of the people while watching the television, an then allows you to also watch the television to give you an insight to what is happening

Does it change the pace at all through the clip? yes

Sound:
What do you notice in particular about the way sound has been constructed in this clip? It is been both diegetic and non-diegetic, it puts across news, and television statements, but also plays the surrounding natural noises.
Why do you think these choices have been made by the directors? It makes the scene more realistic.

Mise-en-scene (everything you see in the scene):
How have the locations been created? Special effects, Using smoke machines, explosions, Dark lighting, and the people used (their image, the transport they use).

What in them suggests time / location / situation to the audience? The time of the film is foreshadowed by the vast amount of technology shown, such as the windows of buildings being used as one huge screen, to advertise and show the news.
The location is foreshadowed by not only the dark dismal weather normally associated to England, but also the language to which the people speak, the language on the television and the general race of people shown.
Furthermore, the situation is evident as all the people shown in the film are wearing black, symbolising darkness and depression. Also the vast amount of news flashes being heard, and seen on the screen foreshadowing some sort of tragedy, or global devastation.

GENRE:

What type of film do you think this is, from the clip you’ve been shown? I would say this is mainly a action film, this is shown by the explosion, entered at the beginning of the scene, totally unexpected. Also due to the sudden death of baby Diego in the opening scene, and how is massively effects the world, portraying that there is going to be a lot more to the story.
You may well think it falls under a number of types (genres)? Yes this film is a Hybrid, I would say that this film could be classed as an action film, Thriller, and also Science-fiction due it being set in the future.
What is there in this text which you could use to support each of these assumptions of genre? To support my assumption of Science-Fiction, the film is set in the future, there is also a broader use of technology, and a new global epidemic that women cannot have children. Secondly for thriller, they have a unexpected explosion which literally make you jump out of your seat, making is a thrilling and entertaining film. Lastly it is also Action, due to the explosion, and the way in which Baby Diego was pulled roughly through the crowd and later stabbed to death.
ie. How are these genres created / communicated in this clip? Special Effects, such as the explosion. Diegetic sound making the film more realistic and tense as it allows the audience to put themselves into the scene. Camera angles and techniques; Hand held camera, moving with the scene making it more intense and allowing you to see all the action from a person’s point of view.

NARRATIVE:
What do you notice about the narrative structure of this clip? We are told what is happening from the beginning in the news clips. It is showing you the devastation after the death, rather then before showing that you are not actually viewing the beginning of the story. It only allows you to have a quick insight to what has happened.

This is the opening of the film.
What does it do which fulfils your expectations of what the opening of a film “should” be like / include in terms of narrative? On the bases of Narration it does fulfil expectations, as for the opening it only allows you to know important themes in the film, while only giving you a small insight into the film. It gives you enough of the story to lead your curiosity, resulting in you wanting to watch more. The beginning scene is busy, depicting various parts of the story keeping you intrigued.
Does it do anything different in terms of narrative structure? Yes as normally a film will begin with the actual start of the story and will then go through from the beginning to the ending, but this film places the opening scene somewhere in between the beginning and ending of the story, enabling the audience to think more about what has happened, and allowing the scene to go straight into the action.

AUDIENCE:

Which audiences do you think are being targeted to watch this film?
I would generally say people the age target is between 16-40 years

You might want to segment these audiences by:
Age: 16 - 40, wide spread audience

Gender: Both male and female as the story line affects both men and women, in fact the entire.

Lifestyle / life stage: Working class, older generation as it has politics, affects of the modern day society is a main theme.

Financial situation: Working class, ordinary film, working class are the biggest group in society and therefore it will be financially targeted at them, they will get more viewings and bigger profits. Even though i would say it is targeted working class it also would appeal to every other social class, but Upper class may prefer theatre.

From this clip, what is there to attract these different audiences? There are explosions, political views, technology, interesting story line, well known actors, so the audience is familiar.

VALUES AND IDEOLOGIES:

What kind of messages does this text seem to be giving to its audiences? To cherish what you have, do not take things for granted, as you never know when they will be taken away. Also tolerance, as a country they are trying to deport all immigrants and Muslims. Thirdly to look after our planet, and try to minimize global warming otherwise there will be consequences to the world and how we live in it.
Eg. Do you think the film makers are trying to give the audiences messages about current issues? Yes
If so, which, and what is their message? Global warming, the growing economy and how we abuse what we have.

How do you know this from this clip? Their are no children, which shows the lack of a growing economy. also the deportation of immigrants in the news flash, lastly the musky sooty air, black buildings, stained from acid rain
